What’s love got to do with it?

Most of my days are spent thinking about our users at Carbonmade. One thing they won’t stop asking us is “Why am I not #1 on Google.”

Good Question Susan, Danny, Siobhán, and to the 8,312 others that have asked us this over the past six years.

You overrate your attractiveness to Google. Unlike your lady and boyfriends, Google doesn’t care about your good looks or how long you can walk your yoyo (or dog).

Google is attracted to a single thing: hyper linked resource locators, and it spends every tick of it’s clocks searching for them. For everyone it finds about you, it makes a note on who it was from. Oh, hey - Bill’s Blog about Tuna is awesome and thinks you’re awesome. You must be OK.

It takes many links for Google to begin to believe how good looking you are.

If you’re going to have any chance at being #1 in Google, it’s going to be from describing yourself well and getting your site linked up by folks Google already finds attractive. For instance: Bill Clinton, Bill Gates, or Caplin the Capybara. Caplin the forage fish won’t do. Doing our part, we also ping Google to let them know when our users portfolios go online and provide with their first link within our portfolio listing.

In closing, a quote from Mother Teresa: “If you judge people, you have no time to love them.”  You’re not number one because Google does not love you or your mother.
